Abstract Paintings / Light Sculptures

Ecstatic Apophenia

With my light sculptures and abstract paintings, I attempt to create complex compositions that unfold naturally and by chance. In this way they represent and transmit the mystery and complexity of nature rather than the subjective experience of the individual. I typically set up the parameters for each piece of work, as you would establish the rules of a game, and then I allow the process to unfold. For example, ‘Constellation’ zinc light sculptures consist of metal panels with hundreds or thousands of individually drilled holes that create abstract compositions that resemble the night sky. In as much, the composition is both random, and at the same time something we can project order and meaning onto.

The binary paintings are like oceans of language, or data that are actually void of information.
Like backround interference or noise, they indicate activity, both electronic and mental. They elude to the architecture of the internet, and to money… both of which can be seen as having no physical reality. Simply information – codified into electronic data…

But for me.. this mass of code can also be seen in a purely abstract way. The eyes are carried across the surface searching connections and patterns. As when we are confronted with too much visual information or data… we zone out and enter a momentary state of suspension. The thinking mind disengages, and we simply ‘see’.
It is this oscillation between reflection, and seeing that interests me. I want the work to act both as a catalyst for enquiry, while at the same time a vehicle that transports us into an aesthetic revery.
